Finally, about a year after starting to work on it, and over two years after writing the first rough version, is available on the AppStore. (note that this was originally known as iSculpt)

forger is a sculpting app for the iPad. For a full description on what forger does and does not do visit forgerapp.com.

Whilst is true that it won’t let you sculpt super detailed models, it should have enough features for you to block in the initial subdivision level of a model, and then export this model to a computer to continue working on it  on some professional 3D package, since it imports/exports Wavefront OBJs. (like it or not, it’s pretty much the industry standard when it comes to simple, non animated meshes. Its easy to parse, and I would say that nearly 95% of all 3d software supports it.)

forger also comes with some really generic basemeshes (sphere, cube, plane, bust, body) so you can start sculpting as soon as you download it!

I would like to say that for me this is NOT a finished project, is will be an ongoing thing, I have already planned the full roadmap up to forger v2.0.0 (but I am open to suggestions ) I do not have a date for it nor I know if I will ever get enough time to invest on it and finally get to v2.0, so please, if you find it useful or you are curious, and want to see how it turns out, support it by buying the app! (and convince your friends and colleagues to buy it too!) I don’t want to make any promises, that is the reason why I am not showing (publicly) the roadmap nor talking about features that will be added in the future as the fact that I have now about an hour available every day to work on it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will always be the case.

As a modeler I feel that I have a pretty good idea on what is needed and I know in which direction this app should go, but like I said I am always open to suggestions. PS: ok, I’ll tell something in advance… an iCloud-compatible version is in the works, so you will be able to sync all your works across all devices and save them in the cloud. (If that is any useful )

I spent the last few months doing some low res sculpt tests to see if it would be worth for me to start working on a project that I have in mind, and the truth is that I am pretty happy with the results.

I have always said that the details in a sculpt don’t make the model, it is the low subdivision levels that make it good or bad, but one thing is to say it and another one to prove it. With these works I wanted to prove (at least to myself) that this was true.

All of these busts have around 60k triangles <hint>(which is what some handheld devices would be able to draw at a decent framerate)</hint> and no adaptive/partial subdivision trickery was applied to them. Meaning that they are consistent on all levels in the sculpt, ie (the back of the heads is just as subdivided as the front of the face is, I did not attempt to subdivide the face separately from the back of the head, which would result in more triangles where needed)

I would like to finish and detail them, but that’s outside of the scope of the initial research for my project, so I might pick them up and finish them at some point in the not-so-near future.

Having seen the results, I have decided that I am going to start working on my little project, even if no one likes it, at least I would be more than happy to use it.

This is my 2009 Modeling reel. I am looking for work as a Modeler.

Everything is improvable, and the more I look at it, the more I hate some models or parts of these models, but I had to finish it at some point, and I think that this was the correct time to say “stop”. It is also good the fact that I am able to see some errors, for me that means that if I am able to find them, I might be able to correct them too, the “real” problem would be if I were unable to see any of them, I guess…

That being said, I still like my reel and I hope it can get me a work.

By the way right now I’m preparing to start my new 2008 reel and I say that I’m preparing because for this one I don’t want to search for a job whith a reel done in less than a couple months. The first one was done just for fun, this one is for getting hired (or at least trying it )

At this moment I will accept that gallery issue but I am still working on the gallery *.css file, cause it sucks… I know…hehe
